Chapter Twenty-Four
Charityâs eyes fluttered open Sunday morning; she hadnât heard her alarm go off. She frowned, and looked out the window. Huh. The sun was just starting to crest over the hillside. Had she gotten up before her alarms? She reached over for her cell phone and dragged it in front of her face. She felt oddly alert forâ
Charityâs eyes bulged. She had gotten up before her alarms. It was six in the morning, the time when she used to get up.
A smile crossed her face as she settled her phone onto her chest. Her eyes were comfortably open, staring up at her ceiling. She felt lighter than she had in daysâgood for the first time since this whole death mess began. She smiled to herself before she rose, her body longing to get something done that day. Her mind wasnât racing, and she didnât feel any tension in her shoulders. She set her cell phone on the side of the bed after turning off the three alarms she had set to wake her up for her workday. Maybe a day off was what she needed. A stomach full of food, some television, a stare-off session on the couch.
And Matt.
Her eyes fell closed as she regaled herself with her night. She was almost sure she felt this way because of her night with Matt. She still felt the tingling electricity of his lips against hers. She relived the moment, over and over, as her hand came to her lips. Her phone vibrated on the bed next to her, and she picked it up, bringing it to her face to see who was contacting her.
As if heâd read her mind, it was a text from Matt.
Good morning. Hope you got some sleep.
She considered texting him and telling him she had fun, but Charity closed out her phone instead. It wasnât as if the night had been real. Matt was simply doing what he felt compelled to do. Heâd seen her save him. None of this effort he was putting in was genuine or meaningful. There was no use in entertaining the idea anything further than she had entertained with James. One date. One night. One moment to simply forget.
She hadnât slept with Matt, but sheâd still had a date with him. A date that had gone well. And now? It was time to move on.
Charity slid from her bed and began her morning routine. She washed up in the shower, went through the rigmarole of picking out her outfit, and laid out her jewelry. She ironed out her dress and picked out the makeup sheâd wear. She slipped into the perfect heels that matched her dress before heading into her kitchen. She plucked a banana and a muffin from the bowl in the middle of the kitchen table, clocking how low it was getting.
âAloe water and coffee at work,â she said to herself.
Charity tried not to let the deviation in her routine get to her too much. All she needed to do was grocery shop, something she could do on her lunch break.
